One hour Kayak Experience

19th September 2021, 14:00 - 15:00

This is a one hour introduction to kayaking in a modern sit-on-top kayak on Cheddar Reservoir, near Axbridge, Somerset, led by a qualified instructor, suitable for ages 10 and above (or 8 and above if with an adult in a double kayak).

The course gives you the skills to manoeuvre your kayak around the lake, covering how to launch, paddling in a kneeling position, standing up, forwards paddling, reverse paddling and turning around.

Your kayak, paddle and buoyancy aid are provided. You will need to bring clothes and shoes that can get wet and a towel.

The session starts with a safety briefing and introduction to the kit, followed by a land demo and on the water instruction.

Once the group has mastered the basics, perhaps with a game or two, there will be a short trip around the lake to practice the basic techniques and explore.

There will be the opportunity to practice all the skills learnt before returning to shore for a debrief and discussion on next stages for developing your skills.

COVID-19 Precautions

Cheddar Watersports takes the health and safety of the community very seriously.

Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and safety considerations, our changing rooms and showers are not currently in use, although the toilets can be used if required.

Prior to attending the course, we will require the completion of temporary membership form, including a Health Declaration.

We have made modifications to our courses to ensure that each participant can maintain social distancing requirements and have their own equipment throughout the session. All equipment touch points will be sanitised before and after each user.

How Much Does It Cost?

The cost is £20 for a single kayak or £30 for a double kayak, with a £5 discount for BCYC members (apply the promo code BCYC_Member and bring your membership card on the day).

Private groups can sometimes be arranged at a cost of £20pp for 4-6 paddlers, £25pp for 2 or 3 paddlers or £40 for a 1:1 in single kayaks. Please contact paddlesports@bcyc.org.uk to discuss options. We can consider accommodating 5-10 year olds in double kayaks with and adult and 8-10 year olds in single kayaks as part of a family group. Our double kayaks can accomodate a younger child as a thrid person - please ask if these are of interest for your private group.

What if the weather is bad?

In extreme circumstances when it is too windy, the session will not be able to take place and an alternative date will be offered to all participants.

What Do I Need to Bring?

Clothes suitable to wear on the water, e.g. a wetsuit or sports leggings/shorts, base layer top and a T shirt. A light rain/wind jacket is advisable if wet. The weather may be warm, but the water can still be cold at this time of the year.

A towel

A change of clothes

Please come dressed for the course or prepared to change in/by your car, as our changing rooms are currently closed due to COVID-19 restrictions.
