Although BCYC is primarily a dinghy sailing club, windsurfing members are also welcome. There is a friendly bunch of windsurfers of all ages and all standards who turn up regularly for recreational windsurfing, as well as some serious racers and freestylers who compete at national level.
BCYC is an ideal place to windsurf offering flat, sparkling clean water, open to the wind (the reservoir is raised up above the Somerset levels) and, above all, it is safe.
David Scriven runs a popular series of Learn to Windsurf and other courses throughout the summer aimed primarily at adults.
Bob Shillito and Paul Hipwell run the Team 15 junior windsurfing club, the Axbridge Animals, which operates on Wednesday evenings from April to September. This is for 11 to 15 year olds. There is a separate group Over2you for older teenagers.
The club is fortunate to own an excellent range of modern equipment for both these activities. Some equipment is also available to BCYC members to use during normal sailing times.
The UK Windsurfing Association holds a round of the very popular King of Lakes event at BCYC and in May each year we have a demo day hosted by Windsurfers World.
Over2you
This group is for those who have progressed beyond Team 15 – over 15 year olds. The emphasis is on having fun and short board/planning skills or freestyle depending on the wind!
It is lead by the very experienced coach Mike Hodge. Mike is a very good windsurfer who used to be a professional instructor. He is a well known character at the local wave spots of Burnham and Weston.
