Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just come along and sail?

You can sail as a visitor three times per year with appropriate boat insurance, or during an Open Event or as a club member.

How can I learn to sail?

We offer both junior and adult training at the club for both members and non-members, please look at the training section on the website. Alternatively, there are many local dinghy sailing schools

Can I keep the boat at the club?

As a member you can keep your boat at the club, places permitting. There is a charge for storage, please look at the boat storage section of the website.

Which boat should I buy?

This depends on what you want to do on the water, your ability, experience, physical size, and if you want to sail the same boat as other people in the club and of course your budget. Come down and speak to the Fleet Captains who can tell you all about their boats.

How can I join?

All the details about joining are on the membership section of the website or come down to the club, see what’s on offer and talk to one of our members, they’re very friendly!

Top

Is there a waiting list?

There is not a waiting list at present. As we begin the year, space is available in the dinghy park for additional boats. However, at certain times in the season there may be a waiting list for boat storage spaces. You will be contacted if this is the case before pursuing your application.

Can I sail even if I don’t own a boat?

There are options if you don’t own a boat. As a club we have some club boats which you can use for a small charge. Alternatively, there are often helms looking for crew so you could always join in by crewing. A great way to learn about sailing, tactics etc.

Can I sail any boat at BCYC?

There is no restriction on the type of dinghy you can sail at BCYC, as long as you can launch and recover it safely. However, catamarans are not allowed. We have a strong handicap fleet at BCYC with many varieties of boats sailed.

What days can I sail on?

We have sailing on Saturday and Sunday from 11am until approx 1700 hours and Wednesday afternoons and evenings during British summertime. There must be a safety boat on the water in order for you to sail.

Can I sail if I don’t race?

Of course, many of our members cruise enjoying a leisurely sail on the water. The cruisers also organise ad-hoc events at other locations, look out for information at the club or on the website.

My partner and family don’t sail will they be welcome at the club?

BCYC is a friendly, family oriented club. We are always happy to welcome non-sailing members, friends and family. There is a large club house and in the warmer weather plenty of space to lounge in front of the clubhouse. The reservoir provides excellent opportunity for walking and cycling and there is a kids area by the clubhouse. You may want to talk to the membership secretary about the membership type that suits your needs best.

How is the club racing organised?

Club racing has various series throughout the season, ranging from a one-day series to several weeks. We mix it up with fleet and handicap starts and also do pursuit racing. We also offer a good Open programme of the main fleets within the club.

Top

When is the galley open?

The galley opens to coincide with club racing so offers hot & cold snacks on a Sunday. Saturday a wet bar is provided for drinks only. The galley is also open for organised activities such as Opens and Training Days where stated.

Do I have to do club duties?

BCYC is run by members for members, which helps to reduce fees and create the inclusive atmosphere we want at the club. This means that it is essential that members play their part by carrying out their duties. It is by no means a huge commitment and a great way to make new friends. Members who repeatedly fail to carry out their duties will be asked to leave the club.
